Reflexive Looper: Guthman music competition

Reflexive Looper at Guthman! The Flow Machines Reflexive Looper has been as selected for the semi-final of the 2016 Guthman Musical Instrument Competition.

The Guthman musical instrument competition is an annual event is aimed at identifying the world’s next generation of musical instruments. Its objective is therefore to unveil the best new ideas in musicality, design, and engineering.

The competition is organised by the Music Technology (GTCMT), an international center for creative and technological research in music. The center focuses on the development of innovative musical technologies consequently transforming the ways in which we create and experience music.

The good news is, the  Reflexive Looper participates to the semifinals of the Guthman competition! The Reflexive Looper is an AI loop pedal that understands what the musician is playing and answers back.
And here you have Pat Metheny, judge of the Guthman competition, listening to the Reflexive Looper!

Reflexive Looper at Guthman

Just like a human musician, The Reflexive Looper understands music. It does so through a real-time classifier that identifies the human musician’s playing modes (e.g. bass-lines, chords, solos, drums or choirs). Because of this skill, the Reflexive Looper knows how to properly listen, and store a music performance. But the Reflexive Looper is also able to play! Indeed, it can respond in real-time to music by filling in the missing instruments. And it can also generate new musical material in the musician’s style.

During the competition we performed jazz and pop tunes. To have an idea of how it works, check out our Reflexive Looper videos!
